Unsuccessful Recovery

I went to the beach this morning to search for a missing wedding set. They were lost on July 4th. Someone else had already looked for them. I search the beach that they had set camp on for 3.5 hours. They had also traveled 2 blocks south to meet up with friends. The rings were in the pictures taken on the other beach. Later in the day, she noticed them missing. I search the other beach for about 1.5 hours.

I don’t think that they are on the original beach. I did a very fine grid, to the point 2 people came up to me saying you are very thorough, you must be looking for something important. They had never seen such a large area with the scoop trails.

My guess is that either she lost them on the 2 block walk back to camp, or someone else has found them. Not every search is successful. Hopefully, they will think of somewhere else they stopped and I can search that area.

I did find part of a silver ring from the UNCAS Manufacturing Co. After some research, I discovered that they make fine jewelry for Disney, Sea World, and Coca-Cola. To bad that the ring was in the salt water for so long, I would have liked to has seen the design.

Remember to give me a call if you have lost something metal in Southern New Jersey, the Jersey Shore, Southeastern Pennsylvania, or Northern Delaware. Have a GREAT day everyone.

Lost Class Ring

Last week I received a call asking if I could search for a lost class ring. Bill thinks that he lost it in his front yard. I started to ask the normal questions like: What were you doing? Is it in grass, dirt, water? And so on.

Bill stated that he was shoveling snow, ok it is summer now. He said the ring was new and it was bothering him while shoveling. So he took it off and put it in his pocket. He forgot about it and noticed 2 days later that the ring was gone.  He was reading stories about “Ring Finders”, did a search and found me.

Here is the kicker, IT WAS LOST IN THE 1960’s. 50+ years ago. I told him I would be over later in the day to look. It was a small yard. I grid searched in one direction. No luck. Searched in the other direction. The ring is not there. Bill was happy that I looked but disappointed that I didn’t find it. If I did it would have made one heck of a story…

1st Time Out With My New Toy, Equinox 800!

I had an unexpected day off. So I charged my new toy (Equinox 800) and took it out for some dirt fishing.

The sounds are a lot different, it will take some time to get used to. I went to an old nearby sledding hill that had been heavily searched by many people. I stayed for about an hour.

I found a few coins and a lot of slaw (pieces of mowed aluminum cans). I did pull out a 14k white gold ring. It is damaged but it has 2 small diamonds in it. Not bad for its 1st time!!

Where does my Property End?

I recently received a call to see if I could locate 3 property markers. We set a date for a few days later.

I went to look for the first one. There were a lot of targets in the area but not the one I was looking for. about 30 minutes later I went to the second location. Within 1 minute I located that one.

Off to the third location. That one was tricky. There was a hollow metal fence post covering that one, but it didn’t take long to locate it. Back to the first one. I searched again with no luck. There was a new section of cement in the sidewalk in the area the post should be located. I am wondering if it was pulled out when they were replacing the sidewalk.

2 out of three isn’t bad. The client was very happy.

Spring is Here!!

Spring is here so that means lost ring season is just around the corner. I just recently found a set of rings for a very upset owner. It was her engagement ring & wedding ring. I didn’t think that there would be a good outcome. To read about it, click here.

I have more key finds after snow storms, this past winter. They were all quick recoveries.

Just a reminder, if you lose something call a professional. Don’t waste your time and money renting or buying a metal detector. It takes years to learn how to properly use a metal detector.

Yard Work & Keys, Not a Good Combination!!

I went out on another search for a ring of keys. John lost them while raking leaves. See the full story here: Leaves

We all do it, put our keys in our pockets or wear jewelry while doing yard work. It’s good for me because I keep getting calls for service. Here is a Public Service Announcement (PSA), leave your keys and valuables in the house while you are working in the yard.

I want to wish everyone a safe and happy Holiday Season.

New Recovery in Medford NJ

My latest recovery has been posted:

Yard work claims another wedding ring in Medford NJ

This is my second wedding ring recovery in Medford this year.

So many rings are lost doing yard work, especially in the fall and spring, when the temperatures are still cool. Your fingers shrink because of the cool air, which makes it easier for rings to come off. As in this story, the ring was nowhere near where he thought that he lost it. He stated that there was no way that it would be in this section of the yard.

I always expand the search area if I don’t find the lost item in the areas that I was directed to. In this case, as many others, expanding the search area paid off.

If you lose a metal item, call a professional to assist in helping you in locating your lost items.

My Latest Recovery in Stone Harbor NJ

I received a desperate email from a devastated woman. I was Mary’s last hope. The day before she went with her family for a day trip to the beach in Stone Harbor NJ. Margate NJ in the Beach Replenishment Zone

Look at these beauties that I found for a desperate woman who lost them 2 days earlier. They were located in the Beach Replenishment Zone in Margate NJ.

After recently having back surgery I wasn’t sure if I was up for a long hunt. My physical therapist just gave me the ok to start swinging a metal detector last week.

It was a 2 hour plus search. To read the full story click here: Margate NJ Lost Rings

My Latest Call For Help…

Art sent me an email asking if I would search his yard in Cherry Hill. He needed his property markers found.

We agreed to meet after work a few days later. I take three different machines with me on each hunt. For this hunt, I chose my Minelab Explorer II. Ran it wide open with no discrimination. The whole search took less than 10 minutes; It took longer to pack my truck than it did for the search.

The markers were buried beneath 1 inch of dirt and grass. Art was a very happy man. He stated that he has been looking for them for a very long time. He didn’t want to have to have his property resurveyed.

Art didn’t want any pictures taken. Continue reading My Latest Call For Help…

Busy Season

This is the busy season for metal detectorists. Many frantic calls from people who have lost items while at the shore or swimming lakes.

What are some of the common denominators?

1st. Sun tan lotion and oils make your hands and fingers very slippery. Then you have a catch, dig a hole or shake off your towel and rings slip right off of your fingers. Other take their rings off before applying sunscreen and think that they put their items in a safe spot, like cup holder on a chair or on their towel. They then forget about it and fold up their chair or shake off their towel. There goes the jewelry.

Teamwork!!

I recently received a desperate plea to help search for a lost engagement ring.

It’s a good thing that I had made arrangements 2 weeks earlier. I recently had surgery and could not complete the search. I made arrangements with fellow metal detectorist Ed to handle any calls that I receive while on the recovery trail.

I took the information from Derrick and gave Ed a call. Ed was able to go out and search that day. He said it took all of 10 minutes to find the ring that was missing for more than 24 hours. This recovery was made in Lumberton NJ.

Teamwork made this recovery happen.

This is the season that calls for lost items increases immensely, especially since I am near the beaches of NJ. If you lose something, try to get the GPS Coordinates from your cell phone. This will greatly increase the chances of making a recovery. If you can’t get GPS numbers, mark the area with immovable items, or take pictures of the surrounding area.

Then call me with the information. 707-706-3626

A March Recovery

Here is a link to on of my latest recoveries (Medford NJ).

I was a nice day in March for a search. The woman was so overcome by emotion when I showed her that I found it. I get more hugs doing this hobby.

“Betty” didn’t want to have her picture taken so there is no photo of her with the ring.

If you lose a metal item I can’t stress it enough, call a professional.

Over the Border. Looking for property lines.

I received a non-jewelry recovery call the other day. I am always up for a new challenge. Kevin asked if I could find his property markers. This is a first for me. I might have to add this to my specialities.

It took a while to find the first one since I had no reference as to what number or tones I was listening for. Once I had that information I found the second one within a minute.

Lost Ring Successfully Recovered

Lost Ring
Picture of the beautiful ring that was tossed after an argument. After a week this lost ring was found by a professional detectorist.

Here is a link to one of my recent recoveries of a lost ring.

Flying Ring in Maple Shade NJ

It started with a little tiff and ended up with a flying ring into the backyard. Two metal detectors bought and several hours spent looking on hands and knees, looking for a lost ring, until they decided to call a metal detecting professional.

The engagement ring was lost for over 1 week. It amazes me at how many rings are tossed because of an argument.

As I always say, if you need help finding a lost metal item, give a professional a call. It takes years to learn how to properly use a metal detector, and know what a detector is trying to tell you.

Let me know how you like the story!

SJ Magazine Article on “Ring Finders”

Back in May I mentioned that I was interviewed for an article that was going to be published in SJ Magazine. Well it has arrived in the September issue.

SJ Magazine “Ring Finders”

Myself & fellow ring finder Jeffrey Lagg are featured in the article. We both are in the Public Service sectors with our jobs. Jeff is a firefighter and I am a paramedic.

The article is well written and portrays metal detecting in a positive light, not your normal hole digging nerds.

Let me know what you think of the article.

Beach Season Is Here!

No jewelry

With beach season comes the increase in calls for my services with my metal detector. I don’t mind, I love any chance I get to get out with my detector to search for jewelry. I have made many recoveries. To see some of them check out my Recoveries Page.

A lot of rings are lost after applying sunscreen, which makes your fingers slippery, then putting your hands in the water, which shrinks your fingers. This allows the rings to fall off. Continue reading Beach Season Is Here!

Local News

I don’t know about you, but I like reading about other metal detectorists who are able to find and return lost items. Or they find historical artifacts.

There was an article in our local paper, this week,  about a woman who lost a ring about 10 years ago. This ring was in the family since 1914. A friend of the family asked the husband if he could search their yard, with his metal detector to look for old items.

Well guess what he found in the back yard? The ring pictured below. I have also included a link to the news paper article. These stories are GREAT exposure for our hobby. It help to break the stereotype mental image of the old guy, on a beach detecting around all of the beach blankets, leaving deep holes everywhere.
